Our Why
Hi, I'm Helen Merchant and I'm the founder of Parents First Steps. I am a proud USU Aggie and graduate this Spring. God and family are the most important things to me and this shows through everything I do.
The motivation for this idea first came in the spring of 2023. I had gotten married to my wonderful husband Alex that past December and his aunt was sharing some knowledge with me and a small group about preparing for pregnancy.
I was blown away. I thought I understood all there was to know about pregnancy and birth, but as I listened I realized how little I actually knew.
I knew I wasn't alone and that so many other couples out there just thought that they had little to no control over the kind of pregnancy or birth they had. That it was like rolling a die and if you had a great birth great, if it was terrible too bad, that was just your luck. Now I knew though that wasn't true.
Your Why
We can't control everything, but we can take steps to have a better marriages, pregnancies, and parenting experiences. And no matter what stage you are currently in, there are things you can start doing now to make a difference.
Parents First Steps works to connect parents with local businesses, resources, and knowledge to help them take their first steps to a better marriage, pregnancy, and parenthood and to inspire others to do the same.
Some cultures begin preparing the parents for 3 years before they conceive, so it is never too early to start preparing together. Or maybe you are ready to start having kids but are struggling to get pregnant. Want to lessen morning sickness? Have more energy? Have a quick labor and delivery? Or want to know how to be a supportive husband and what to expect?
Need help figuring out best ways to help your newborn? Struggling to breastfeed? How to heal postpartum? Or maybe you've already had a kid or two, but want to improve your experience the next time around. Whatever stage you are in there is knowledge to be gained and steps to be taken towards a better pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

Parenthood is one of the greatest things we can do in this life. And as we unite together as husband and wife we can create an amazing life for our family. There is an increasing trend among younger generations to put off having kids for later years or to never have kids. But we are here to say: It's important, it's worth it, and you can do it together.
